About Zeb's Birth

Zeb was born on June 12, 2003 at 4:17pm at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, TN.  He was born 9 weeks early at 31wks old.  I had went to the doctor for a routine visit and was admitted to Hamilton Medical Center immediately.  My blood pressure was dangerously high and my platelet count was dangerously low.  There was also a very significant amount of protein in my urine.  I had preeclamsia and something called Hllp syndrome.  My liver was not working properly.

I was at the hospital in Dalton only about 30 mins and they sent me by ambulance to Erlanger.  There I was put on bedrest and they began giving steroid injections to help with the development of Zeb's lungs.  I was on an IV and a catheter.  That was Tuesday, June 10th.  I remained in bed for 2 days.  On Thursday morning, 6/12/30, they began inducing labor.  That afternoon, I began vomiting.  A nurse was called and they determined that Zeb and I were in immediate danger.  At 4:12, I was wheeled from my room to the OR.  My placenta had burst.  They performed an emergency c-section and Zeb was born at 4:17.  It was a whirlwind and scary, but when Zeb arrived he was able to breath on his own.  God is good!!

Zeb's Stay in NICU

Zeb was taken immediately down to the TC Thompson's Children's Hospital NICU.  (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)  Zeb was able to breathe on his own and they wheeled him by the door of what had been my room so that Brandon and everyone waiting there could see him.  He was so tiny.  I was completely under anesthesia so they were closing me up and then wheeled me back to that room.  I don't remember a whole lot of the rest of that day.  I was on some pretty strong stuff.  Bran went to see Zeb and took Grandparents and his aunts and uncle.

Zeb had a CPAP on for his first few days in NICU.  It was out very quickly b/c he could breathe without its assistance.  The second night he was in NICU, his lung collapsed and they had to enter a tube into his lung.  This is not uncommon for preemies to do.  He had the tube in only a few days.  He still has a little scar from this.  He had an IV for over a week.  He began sucking a bottle earlier than they expected.  Mom was providing him with plenty of breast milk to eat.  He began growing fast.  He did so very well.

Zeb had a few apnea spells and brady spells.  (Periods of forgetting to breathe).  They put him on caffeine.  Gave him a little Dr. Pepper!  J/K.  But he was on caffeine and that stopped the spells.  B/c preemies aren't supposed to have to breathe yet, they sometimes forget.  Zeb was hooked to about 5 wires and the machines would alarm during these spells.  He was always able to bring himself out.

God had truly blessed Zeb.  He did so well at NICU.  They had been telling us that all we were waiting on was for him to gain weight.  Exactly one month from his birth, July 12, 2003, Zeb was allowed to go home.  We were not expecting it.  They had told us he would have to be 4lbs.  But he was 3lbs 13 oz and had done so well that they let us take him home!  We were so very excited!  Nervous and Excited!

So Thankful!!!

Zeb went to the doctor last week, 2/19/04, and he weighed 15lbs and 14 oz.  He is getting to be a big boy.  He is starting to sit up, eating baby food and starting on some finger foods.  There are tons of pictures on the pictue site.  God has watched over Zeb and put a blessing upon him.  I believe that God has great things in store for Zeb.  I pray daily that Zeb will grow to have a heart that truly loves God.  We are so thankful for what he has done for us!  He is so good that He cares about us in our every day lives.  He sent His Son so that I could be saved from eternal death.  But He didn't stop there!  He listens to me everyday.  Knows my innermost desires, better than I know them and He loves me enough to want to give them to me.  He  is with me every step of every day!  All along my way... and He was with Zeb.  I sang to Zeb those 2 days of bed rest in Erlanger.  I sang "He's got the whole world in His Hands... "  And I know that He does!
